This ruby came out of a really nice antique ring that was unfortunately too worn out for restoration. It is cut into a very symmetrical oval that weighs 2.11 Carats measuring 8.93 x 7.44 x 3.63mm. When it comes to ruby anything over 2 carats is considered rare, this one has not been treated in any way which increases the rarity yet further.
This ruby is from Thailand which is sometimes referred to historically as Siam ruby. There has not been any production of this material for over two decades. When it was being mined much of it was heated and/or filled. There were never many large, untreated rubies. Many had purple or brown tones and were darker and closed up in lower lighting conditions. This ruby doesn't have any strong modifiers and it is a bright, vivid red color in low light. Outdoors it shifts a bit more pinkish red in color.
Like many rubies from Thailand this one is eye clean and without silk. Under a high power microscope the inclusion scene is amazing with a galaxy of multi phase inclusions and the shimmering rainbow of iridescent inclusions. Would make a great study stone for a collection!
This collectors gem would also make a beautiful piece of jewelry that can be worn, enjoyed, and passed down for generations to come!
